Dark Love
(L'amore buio)
One Sunday by the beach in Naples, a dangerous cocktail of drinking and drugs leads Ciro (Gabriele Agrio) and three of his adolescent friends to rape another teenager, Irene (Irene De Angelis). Sentenced to the island prison of Nishida, a remorseful Ciro comes to terms with what he has done. Meanwhile on the outside, Irene struggles with trauma, receiving little support from her upper-class family who would rather sweep it under the carpet.
When Ciro writes long letters to Irene as a form of therapy, she finds the strength to write back, and the film skillfully cross-cuts between these two characters as they attempt to cope with the consequences of the brutal crime.
Writer-director Antonio Capuano (Pianese Nunzio, Fourteen in May) has made a low-budget, understated and sensitive film about the aftermath of rape and its rippling shockwaves.
Feature film will screen with English subtitles
